What are full removable dentures?

Full removable dentures are a removable artificial device designed to replace all missing natural teeth in the upper arch, lower arch, or both. It is one of the oldest treatments used by dentists to rehabilitate dentitions.

An edentulous mouth faces a series of drawbacks that deeply affect the patient’s health and quality of life. Teeth are essential for chewing and speaking, and they provide a crucial aesthetic appearance. If we do not chew properly, our digestion and health suffer. And without an aesthetic smile, our self-confidence and social life are impacted.

Full removable dentures are made of acrylic resin and are currently especially indicated for patients who cannot undergo fixed dental implant treatment due to health reasons, lack of maxillofacial bone, age, or financial reasons.

A particular type of full removable dentures are those known as immediate dentures. These are provisional prostheses named as such because they can be placed on the very same day the teeth are extracted, provided they have been manufactured beforehand. This way, a patient beginning implant treatment can go home with a beautiful smile from day one.

Advantages of full removable dentures

It is worth mentioning as a primary advantage that full removable dentures not only replace missing teeth, but also the lost maxillary bone and gum tissues that have deteriorated over time.

For this reason, they are mostly indicated when oral health and aesthetics depend on the replacement of teeth, bone, and tissue, achieving an attractive aesthetic appearance.

Secondly, removable dentures are easy to clean and maintain, especially for elderly patients who face difficulties with brushing and flossing.

Price is also considered an advantage, as it stands as the most affordable dental rehabilitation treatment.

Disadvantages of full removable dentures

While in use, the denture may shift, becoming unstable and uncomfortable. Furthermore, if bone loss is significant, it may slip out during certain moments, such as speaking or chewing.

The physical changes (bone and gum atrophy) involved in losing all teeth continue even while wearing the denture. When the prosthesis is removed, the patient experiences a collapse of the lip and profile, as well as the loss of their smile.

Chewing capacity decreases, as does the ability to taste food, since the palate is completely covered.

Due to all these drawbacks, this type of dental prosthesis is a minority option at our IDIM dental clinic in Valencia. We use them solely as temporary prostheses while the patient completes their dental implant treatment, or for patients who cannot receive dental implants due to health reasons.

Tips for cleaning full removable dentures

The primary piece of advice is a proper brushing technique for the removable denture, for which a special brush should be used to remove any trapped food particles. Although it may sound contradictory, the use of toothpaste is not recommended, as it can build up in the micropores and cause a foul odor over time.

It is recommended to remove it during sleeping hours and store it in a safe, clean, and dry place. Before and after use, it should be cleared of any adhesive products. Prior to reapplying adhesive, bear in mind that just a few small dots on the base of the denture will be sufficient.

Hygiene is also essential for the gums and tongue, which should be cleaned using gauze or a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Avoid cleaning the prosthesis with hot water to prevent warping, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

If you feel the denture is loose, if it causes discomfort due to cracking, or if it breaks, stop using it and visit our dental clinic in Valencia so we can properly check and repair it. This will prevent damage to the remaining tissues.
