What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that removes stains caused by tobacco use, pigments in food and drinks, certain medications, and inadequate oral hygiene.

Over the years, and due to the factors mentioned above, teeth tend to change color—most often shifting to a yellowish or even grayish tone, depending on individual habits. To restore a healthy white glow to the smile, teeth whitening treatments have become increasingly popular.

Tooth enamel contains millions of microscopic pores that, over time, allow organic compounds to penetrate through to the dentin, causing discoloration. To reverse this process, teeth whitening lightens the shade within the patient’s own natural color range—which is unique to every individual, as some naturally have darker tones than others.

Prior to any procedure, a thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the exact cause of the staining, which in some cases may even be due to genetic factors.

How does teeth whitening work?

This dental treatment is based on the use of whitening agents, primarily carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide. These substances make up the gel applied in varying concentrations, which must not come into contact with the soft tissues of the mouth.

The gel allows oxygen to pass through the enamel pores into the dentin, breaking down organic compounds into smaller particles that reflect light more effectively. This process results in a significantly lighter tooth shade.

Patients may experience increased tooth sensitivity during the whitening process. The treatment involves placing a tray with the whitening gel onto the dental arch; its activity is accelerated through exposure to intense light (LED, plasma arc, or halogen), a technique known as photo-activated teeth whitening.

This type of whitening must be performed by professionals, as it requires protecting the oral mucosa and providing the patient with special protective eyewear during exposure to intense light.

Once the process is complete, patients typically see results ranging from five to seven shades whiter than their original color.

Why choose this treatment?

Beyond aesthetics—as a person’s smile is their primary calling card—several other factors may lead to choosing teeth whitening.

In many cases, necessary medications such as tetracycline or excessive fluoride can cause tooth staining. Additionally, a trauma that causes internal bleeding from the pulp into the dentin may lead to discoloration. In all these cases, we recommend restoring the smile’s whiteness through this advanced technique.

For teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, an internal whitening procedure is performed. It is important to note that porcelain or resin crowns, as well as composite fillings, do not whiten like natural teeth. In these cases, they must be replaced after the treatment to match the new shade achieved.
