Dental Veneers
What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers, also known as aesthetic veneers, are thin shells that the dental professional firmly attaches to the outer surface of the teeth using resin cement. This allows for a complete transformation of each tooth’s appearance without compromising its functionality.
They have revolutionized the world of cosmetic dentistry, proving that a smile with wide, perfectly aligned teeth is truly possible.
The placement of veneers involves coating the original teeth to reveal a more attractive, perfect, white, and aligned smile.
It is an aesthetic treatment that allows patients to achieve the smile they desire when their original teeth fall short due to wear, breakage, misalignment, or other issues.

Types of dental veneers
The types of veneers vary depending on the material used to manufacture them. There are two main options available:
Composite veneers are the most affordable option. However, they are less frequently used due to lower durability, as they can fracture, change color over time, and require regular maintenance visits to the dentist.
Porcelain veneers are the most popular choice due to their durability and appearance. They maintain their color and luster much longer without the need for constant maintenance, offering a more natural look. Their estimated lifespan is between 15 and 20 years.
How do veneers work?
The first thing to understand is that this aesthetic treatment visually replaces the front surface of the teeth. Therefore, the veneers are what others see when the patient smiles, effectively modifying aspects like color and position.
Beyond aesthetics, their functionality is diverse. Veneers can be placed to repair fractured teeth or to close interdental gaps (diastemas). While other treatments exist for wide spaces, veneers are often the fastest solution. They are also effective for correcting tooth shape, such as when a tooth is too short, has a protrusion, or is slightly misaligned.
Veneers can enlarge and whiten teeth instantly. In both cases, the work is not done directly on the original tooth structure’s appearance, but rather by placing the ideal veneer to achieve the desired aesthetic look for your smile.
Additionally, crowded, overlapping, or widely spaced teeth—as long as the case is mild—can also be resolved with dental veneers. However, they are not recommended for patients with severe crowding, arch defects, or bruxism (teeth grinding).
If a patient decides to get veneers, they should discuss their desired look and the realistic possibilities of achieving it with the professional. Once this is settled, the dentist will begin preparing the teeth by performing a precise dental shaping, where the natural surface is minimally reduced through filing.
The tooth enamel is reduced by approximately 0.5 to 0.7 millimeters to compensate for the thickness of the veneers, ensuring the final tooth size is ideal. Local anesthesia is administered during this step to ensure patient comfort.
Next, impressions of the teeth are taken to custom-build each veneer based on the original tooth. In the final session, the veneers are tested for fit and aesthetics before being permanently bonded.
Advantages of dental veneers
The main advantage of veneers is that they are a minimally invasive aesthetic treatment (the reduction of the tooth is much less than that required for a crown). They provide fast, visible results and correct multiple defects in a single investment.
